The fashion for a Gentlemen to carry a walking stick or cane, not forgetting the Lady's ever-present parasol, evolved from a time when the main Western cultural centers of the world were Paris, London, and New York. Many smaller but no less important areas of culture, population, industry and wealth also followed and adopted these bigger city fashions. Being in fashion was then, as it is now, an important factor in how others viewed you. The cane or walking stick evolved in some parts of the world to become a defensive tool in a time when Gaslights were used to light the dark city streets and ways. Horses and carriages were used as the main transport for a gentleman and a lady wanting to be seen at a social event or to carry on with business and industry Human nature being what it is, a need arose for this fashionable 'upper' class to discreetly defend themselves. A small pistol tucked in a pocket was one way to accomplish this, but a drawback was the lack of ease of accessibility. A walking stick or parasol on the other hand was easily "at hand" for a quick response.Waking sticks had been and were fitted with blades of various lengths and shapes, but with the invention of the Pin Fire cartridge and its firearms in 1830´s, the need for an effective defense was raised to a much higher bar. At a time that coincided with the industrial revolution, inventors rose to the challenge of filling the market by creating and improving the defensive weapon of the Cane, {AKA Canne} or Walking Stick with a mechanism concealing a working firearm This then, is the story of some of the number of different types of ammunition that was intended for use in them, and of the ingenious inventors who developed, patented, manufactured, and marketed the ammunition. Also noted are the different types of firearm mechanisms, and patent drawings which filled the need for the protection and fashion embodied by the Walking Stick. Read more
